To Aru Kagaku No Railgun 16

Well, that story arc ended earlier then I expected. This show really needs more esper related stuff though…

Mii confronts Kurozuma about where he’s been the past two years, thinking he was dead. He notices her Judgement armband though, and simply states that he’s going to disappear soon again. The next day, Mikoto and the others are curious about the relationship between Mii and Kurozuma, so they go to her apartment in the hopes they can get some answers. Mii isn’t home, however upon hearing the name Kurozuma, Mii’s roommate invites the girls in to discuss the matter. She reveals that Mii was indeed once a member of Big Spider. She explains that Mii hit a wall in her esper development, and Big Spider was a place where she felt comfortable with.

After, back at the Judgement station, the girls learn that Anti-skill is planing a raid on the area Big Spider is based. Mii also learns about this, and goes to the area hoping she can warn Kurozuma before he gets caught up in it. Mikoto meets up with Mii on the rooftop, and Mii reveals to her about what happened. Two years ago, Kurozuma went off to rescue Hebitani who had been kidnapped by a rival gang. Mii tried to stop him, knowing it was a trap, but Kurozuma wouldn’t listen, and also tells Mii that perhaps this isnt the place she was meant to be. Mii chased after him anyway, but arrived at the scene too late. Everyone had assumed Kurozuma died in the raid. Back on the rooftop however, Kurozuma appears and explains he wasn’t dead, but was hospitalized and then imprisoned for the two years he was missing. He then tells Mii that he intends to handle Big Spider himself, and again not to help him.

The day of the Antiskill raid however, Mii decides to go off to help Kurozuma hoping that the past wouldn’t repeat itself. Mikoto and Kuroko however, stop her on the way and give her her Judgement armband. The three of them then procede to Big Spider’s hideout to assist Kurozuma. The four of them storm into the hideout, and after Mikoto and Kuroko take care of the gangs guns and the Capacity Down system, Mii tells them to let her and Kurozuma handle everything else.

Kurozuma easily takes down all the grunts (with the help of Mii, who uses her esper power: x-ray vision), and confronts Hebitani. Hebitani then reveals that he has a suicide-bomb rigged to himself. Before he has the chance to use it, Kurozuma knocks him out.

In the aftermath, Anti-skill arrests all the gang members, and Mii reluctantly arrests Kurozuma as well. Kurozuma tells Mii that her new self suits her well.

Well, that was an alright episode. I certainly thought the Big Spider thing was gonna be more then two episodes though. I also though that Mii would be taking kinda of a fallen-hero type of role and that Mikoto and co. were going to have to deal with her (the OP gave me those vibes). It looks like I was dead wrong though, at least for now. I have a feeling though this isn’t the last time we’ll see Kurozuma. Also, although this arc itself was rather short, there was one hint of a bigger story going on in the background: Hebitani had a scene in which he was discussing the Capacity Down system with someone on the phone, and it sounds like someone supplied it to him. Sounds an awful lot like the last arc, and I bet the nameless women in the OP has something to do with it. It seems like the second half of this anime is going to be a lot like the first, with a bunch of small stories that eventually all tie into one big plot.

The only problem I have personally with this anime as a whole is that they seem to be emphasizing the struggles people with little or no esper powers have. And while I see the good in that, I just wish they’d focus more on the actual espers and the different powers. I think the setting for the To Aru story is great, however it leaves me wanting to know more about the strong espers of Academy City. So far in the anime we’ve only been introduced to two of the six Level-5s, and I’d like to at least be introduced to a couple more of them. I should note that I really liked the Accelerator vs the Sisters arc in Index, so I guess I want more of that. However, with Railgun being only 25 episodes, it looks like we’re in store for only one more arc, and it’s really looking to be something similar to the Level-Upper arc (which means it doesn’t look like they’ll touch on the Sisters either). I can only hope the next series (if they do one) will be more about the Academy-City elite, and less of the “losers” struggles (which is ironic because the lead character Mikoto is a Level-5, although I see the point). Oh yeah, and more Touma and Index would be nice!

This Railgun episode wasn’t complete either, because there was no one sided yuri-love! Boo!!
